Pigtail and Icom

HamLog version 4.02 is currently awaiting review by Apple. This release includes support for IC-706MKIIG, IC-7000, IC-7600.

I received this question earlier today:
What modifications would be needed for the Icom? Would the box that I was getting work on the Icom and the Yaesu?

My response was long and provides a bunch of info on Icom support so I felt it would be good to let everyone in on it. The reply follows.
_____________________________________________________________________
The Pigtail is universal, one box supports all radios on the list. Icom is a special beast though in the way the Ci-V connection works.

Back when I was working through prototypes of the Pigtail, I got to testing the IC-706 and realized that the majority of the aftermarket cables that offer DB9 on one end and the Ci-V (mono audio) connector on the other end rely on the DTR signal coming from the computer they’re plugged into. This signal offers +5V which the aftermarket cables use to power the circuitry in their devices. Realizing this, I built a power-to-pin-4 jumper into the board so if you’re using something that wants voltage on pin 4 (DTR) it’s there for you with a placement of a jumper. However, Pigtail is a 3.3 volt board and these aftermarket cables don’t work, at least the one I’m testing with doesn’t.

Right now, today, I can only say that Pigtail will work with the official, branded CT-17 box from Icom. This box is ridiculously expensive though. $139 for about $7 worth of parts and a $5-10 enclosure. I went ahead and bought it for the testing because it’s the standard for connecting Icoms to computers and it’s the only thing I can officially say works. Just like I’ll only say the CT-62 cable from Yaesu is the only cable that works for Yaesu radios with the DIN connector. Connecting the CT-17 to Pigtail, or a computer, is an effort in itself.
The CT-17:
- Needs power : another wire, another battery connection, etc.
- Needs a DB-25 to DB-9 adapter
- Needs a serial cable
- Needs the mono audio cable
- Is another box to lug around
Maybe not a big deal in a fixed operating position but taking the whole shebang out to the park or to a hotel on a trip would be annoying.

Being disgusted by the price of the thing and the connectivity issues I decided to make my own CT-17 adapter board. I submitted the PCB gerber files earlier today to be fab’d. This little board (1.9″x1.4″) plugs straight into the Pigtail’s serial port and gets power on pin 4 from the Pigtail; it’s a 3 volt board that simply does the RS-232<- >TTL level conversion, pretty much what the official box does. On the other end of the board is a mono audio jack so it’s just a matter of plugging in a mono audio extension cable between the Pigtail CT-17 adapter and the Icom radio in question.

This little adapter board would of course have to be sold in order to provide it but the price will be less than $20. The mono audio cable would come with it. I don’t have plans currently to make an enclosure for this little board, probably just feet on the bottom but since there’s an IC on it (MAX3232) ESD might rear its ugly head, we’ll see.

Pigtails @ Dayton

Hello Everyone,
I’m not going to be at Dayton this year but the HamStack folks at
Sierra Radio Systems will have some on hand to hand out. I’m down to
one Pigtail that is unspoken for. I’m asking anyone who wants to
pick one up at Dayton to pay up front so the HamStack guys don’t have
to process any payments for me. I have a 10% off promo code with free
shipping set up for the Dayton orders.

This would be the “Mostly Assembled” item you see in the store, no
accessories as they’re already boxed up and shipped to Dayton.

Please email me at nwgarner@pignology.net if you’re interested in
picking one up there and I’ll send over the promo code so you can
place your order.

73,
Nick
